Brighton & Hove Food Partnership launches 'Kit Out The Kitchen' crowdfunding campaign

Brighton and Hove Food Partnership has launched a month-long crowdfunding campaign to raise £20,000 for a Community Kitchen where local people can be inspired to cook for health, fun and friendship.

The Kit out the Kitchen campaign invites residents and business people from Brighton and Hove and the surrounding areas to help realise the vision of a central Brighton cookery school where adults and children can explore healthy eating, learn new skills and share the joy of eating together.

The Community Kitchen will be for everybody. Cookery courses run in the Kitchen will include subsidised classes for people who can benefit from learning about and sharing good food, for example people with dementia, parents with young children and adults with learning disabilities.

A survey of over 50 local community groups found that 91% agreed, “There is a need for more facilities in the city to teach people essential cookery skills.”

People’s Postcode Lottery

The initial building work in the Community Kitchen is funded by £85,000 from the Veolia Environmental Trust and the players of the People's Postcode Lottery with support from the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation. For the past two months, construction students from Greater Brighton Metropolitan College and local contractors MacConvilles Surveying have been converting derelict office space in the Community Base building on Queen’s Road, Brighton.

Now all that remains is to transform the space into a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen that prioritises accessibility and flexibility. The £20,000 we aim to raise will cover safety flooring (£7,000), the kitchen install (£5,000), cookery equipment (£6,500) and extraction equipment (£1,500).

Crowdfunding on the Crowdfunder platform at
www.crowdfunder.co.uk/community-kitchen-btn
to Kit Out The Kitchen will go live at 11a.m. on Thursday 1 February and continue until 11a.m. Thursday 1 March.

Food Partnership Director Vic Borrill said: “This is the Food Partnership’s most ambitious project yet – and it is also the most exciting
.
Teaching people how to prepare quick and easy, nutritious meals from scratch has always been central to the work of the Food Partnership and the Community Kitchen will be an amazing new home where we can do this. Good food is at the heart of everything we do and the Kitchen will help more people experience the benefits of cooking and eating together.”

Social enterprise

The Community Kitchen will be a social enterprise. At the same time as providing subsidised courses, it will offer competitively-priced cookery courses from local chefs and food experts, and be a venue for hire.

Those joining the crowdfund can qualify for a range of rewards. These include:

·

FREE places on masterclass cookery courses with local chefs.

·

EXCLUSIVE use of the Kitchen.

·

GIFTS of Community Kitchen branded merchandise.

Everybody  who joins the crowdfund will be entered into a prize draw to win a course place for them and a friend. They will also have their name inscribed on  a supporting pillar in the centre of the new Kitchen.
