Brighton charity, Same Sky, offers rewards for donations to raise the £5,000 needed to secure Burning the Clocks event on 21 December
Brighton charity Same Sky this week launches its crowdfunder for Burning the Clocks 2017 – an uplifting antidote to the excesses of a commercial Christmas. Brighton & Hove Council support some of the costs, but the event receives no guaranteed funding and relies on fundraising and support from local business and the community to raise the additional costs needed to cover the event.
This week’s new crowdfunder offers exclusive rewards such as personalised pre-made lanterns, VIP tickets and the privileged role of lighting the bonfire at the end of the Burning the Clocks parade on the beach, in return for donations.
Taking place from 6.30pm on Thursday 21 December 2017, the Burning the Clocks parade runs from New Road to the seafront, with around 2,000 participants and more than 20,000 onlookers. Anyone watching the parade is also encouraged to put any spare cash into the donation buckets on the night, which also helps fund the event.
ollowing last year’s debut, ARKA Original Funerals will again support Burning the Clocks with a donation and buying 25 ‘In Memory’ lantern packages for those who have lost a loved one during the year. These packages, each worth £100, are made up of a personalised lantern, two places at the parade, and the reading of the chosen name at the bonfire.
Local restaurant, The Chilli Pickle, is also sponsoring the event and adding a donation of £1 to every table bill from 1 November until 21 December, which will go towards the crowdfunding target.
John Varah, Same Sky artistic director, said: “This is the fourth year in a row that we’ve crowdfunded to keep Burning the Clocks alive, and we’re sure that it will again be a massive success. Last year we exceeded our target by over £2,500, meaning elements of the event were secured early.
“Burning the Clocks is an iconic Brighton event, and we couldn’t keep it going without the generosity of our sponsors and the city’s residents. In addition to crowdfunding, we will as ever be taking donations from the public along the parade’s route.”
s in previous years, Brighton residents can purchase lantern packs to take part in the parade. The packs contain lantern making materials and wristbands for four people to take part and will be available from early November at Brighton Pavilion, HISBE supermarket in York Place, the Wood Store at Preston Barracks, Lewes Road and Book Nook in Hove.
For the fifth consecutive year, prints by local artist Graham Carter will be on sale from the crowdfunding page. A limited-edition design created around this year’s theme ‘East’, as well as designs from previous years, will be available to buy from the Burning the Clocks’ Crowdfunder page.
