After some delays, work has commenced on the £130m redevelopment of the former wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Circus Street.
The scheme by developer U+I, which was approved by Brighton & Hove planning committee almost three years ago, includes 140 much needed new homes, 450 student rooms and 2,787 sq. metres of office space as well a major dance studio for South East Dance. The market relocated to Hollingbury 13 years ago [see earlier story
Piling is now underway on site after funding for project was secured with GCP Student Living plc and Gravis Capital Management Limited.
It is hoped that the bulk of the scheme will be ready before 2020 and offices and shops could be available for prospective tenants in about six months.
The public private partnership between U+I and Brighton and Hove Council will create more than 400 jobs and inject £200m into the economy over the next ten years.
