Brighton employers inspire their future workforce

One hundred and ten year 9 students at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) were provided with an insight to how local business leaders have progressed through their careers.

The speed networking event was developed by Business in the Community and BACA in response to a survey which identified that fewer than half of businesses that recruit directly from education believe that young people are well prepared for the world of work*.

During the session students networked with representatives from a variety of local companies including SiteVisibility, CPJ Field and Barclays Bank. From hearing how individuals have overcome personal challenges to gaining an insight into the variety of roles that exist within an industry, the session enabled students to engage with a diverse mix of business leaders.

Jason Woodford, CEO of SiteVisibility was among the local leaders in attendance. Commenting on his experience Jason said "Today’s session is just one of a number of initiatives which businesses can take part in, to help prepare young people for the world of work. As a local employer we engage with young people as we recognise they have the potential to be our future workforce".

"Failure to engage with schools will result in businesses facing future recruitment challenges and I hope those that supported today’s activity will join us in taking further action through the network".

Dylan Davies, Principal at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy added "We were delighted to welcome a diverse mix of companies to the school who provided our students with an insight to the variety of careers that exist within their industries. It’s important that young people have the opportunity to engage with business so that they can apply their learning to future aims and aspirations."

Business in the Community is working with BACA to deliver a number of initiatives that help to prepare young people for the world of work. SiteVisibility, CPJ Field and Barclays are amongst local employers that are already supporting the local network. Businesses who join the network have access to a variety of engagement opportunities which can support an employee’s learning and development.

Commenting on the local network Nikki Palmer, Head of Business Engagement at Business in the Community said "Our local network has been established in the city for over a year, with SiteVisibility and CPJ Field leading on a number of initiatives with BACA. We are now looking to build the network which will enable employers to take a strategic approach in preparing young people for the world of work".
