Throwing a "sickie"
New research from AXA PPP Healthcare has found that employees at businesses with fewer than 10 members of staff have an average of 5.2 sick days off work each year, at an average cost of £3,500 to the company. However this figure rises to 6.8 days each year at larger businesses, specifically those employing between 100-250, and costs them an average of £40,500.
However, bosses can be a bit sceptical when receiving calls from their “unwell” team members. According to the research, 60% don’t always believe their staff when they call in sick, with more than one in three admitting to checking their employees’ social media profiles for evidence.
A quarter even said they had no hesitancy in asking other members of staff to call and check on their poorly employee.
Looking at it from the other perspective, almost half of employees are nervous about calling in sick, even when they are genuinely ill.
