In an unexpected move Cathedral Group have submitted an application to hold a market on the site earmarked for an £80m redevelopment to include student housing and university buildings.
The site is owned by the local authority. Cathedral Group and Brighton University are putting together a planning application for 400 units of student accommodation, a dance studio HQ for South East Dance, 200 homes and a university library. It is expected to be ready for submission in 2013.
Prior to submission of the full application, Cathedral Group has now asked for a two-year consent for an ‘eco market’ in the covered warehouse that used to be the wholesale fruit and veg market before it moved to Hollingbury.
According to Cathedral Group spokesperson Rob Sloper, quoted in the Argus, the idea is to "pull people back to the area" and "commence the process of rebirth and growth of the site".
