Railway Station renovation
Brighton mainline railway station concourse is to be radically reconfigured as part of a £5m overhaul to make it more user-friendly while protecting and enhancing its Victorian features.
Southern and Network Rail are proposing to demolish the WH Smith portacabin-type kiosk built in the 1970s to open up the concourse. The departure boards will be relocated to afford better views of the glass-roofed train shed and more ticket windows will be provided to speed up the 7 million passenger journeys every year. There will also be a new waiting area and more retail outlets and the entrance/exit into Trafalgar Street will be reopened allowing access and egress from and to the North Laine area. If listed building consent is given in October [planing consent is not required], work is due to start before the end of the year.
