On Friday the Economic Partnership hosted a visit for senior pupils from Tideway School in Newhaven to talk about career opportunities in the city.
The group of 15 pupils listened to presentations from Rebecca Watkin [Wired Sussex], Martin Clark [Stiles Harold Williams] and Gary Peters [ICP Executive Search and brightonandhovejobs.com]. They also watched video presentations from a range of professionals talking frankly about what their jobs entail.
A number of themes emerged from the presentations including the fact that graduates often don’t end up doing a job directly related to the subject of their degrees but the skills they learn at university still assist them in their work. Also there was a common theme of people changing careers, sometimes three or four times during their working lives.
The last speaker of the afternoon – Gary Peters – is also the sponsor of Brighton & Hove Albion’s football shirts via his company brightonandhovejobs.com and he delighted the students with an exercise which resulted in an Albion shirt as the prize.
