Developers have submitted a planning application for the small but important Hargreaves plot on the corner of the North Laine’s Portland St and Church Street which has been derelict for 15 years.
Littlehampton based developers Brockhampton Land Company [a subsidiary of Hargreaves Property Holdings Ltd] is proposing underground parking for 25 cars with retail on the ground floor and just over 630 sq metres of office space topped by nine apartments all around a central courtyard.

It is anticipated that the application will be considered in October.
ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP COMMENT
Without looking in detail at the application two things stand out. Nine residential units is conveniently below the threshold which would demand that 40% are affordable. This may simply be due to space constraints and any additional housing is welcome but it is a pity that the site won’t contribute anything to the city’s desperate need for affordable housing.
The office space, so close to the city centre and the railway station, is very welcome but application also proposes two retail units on the ground floor; it’s the wrong location for retail.
