Taxman targets restaurant trade
Following a recent campaign against plumbers, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is going use special units to target restaurants to identify tax dodgers in the food trade.
The activity is part of the government's drive to raise more tax by cutting down on tax evasion.
Restaurants have been added to the taxman’s hit-list because they are regarded as a high-risk for tax evasion and HMRC will be interested in the earnings of staff, not just the owners.
Their initial interest will centre around the application of PAYE to the total amount of tips and gratuities that staff receive which the Revenue deems to be a source of taxable supplementary remuneration.
