Footfall on the rise again
Trading during the first week of the year looks surprisingly healthy as far as footfall traffic in Brighton is concerned. The last two weeks of December were also up on last year.
City centre figures are up 25% on last year for the first week in January. It would be unwise to make any rash assumptions that this indicates an improvement in consumer confidence. It is concievable that it had more to do with people rushing to beat the rise in VAT.
It is also not known whether this upturn has translated to an increase in money in the till as many of the shoppers could be window shopping or simply returning unwanted gifts or shopping for bargains. However, it is almost certain to be good news for cafes, restaurants and bars.
