Disgruntled breakaway group seeks to run Pride
A group called Reclaim Pride is putting forward alternative proposals for running the annual celebration by the LBGT community in 2011. The local authority is urging them to work with Pride in Brighton & Hove which has organised the event for past few years.
Reclaim Pride includes Aeon Events, the Women’s Performance Tent, Wilde Ones and Calabash. They propose to focus on fund raising for the LGBT community by ticketing the event which is currently one of the last remaining Pride events that is free of charge. But a spokesperson for Calabash accused the existing business model of not being “fit for purpose”.
In a letter to the Argus newspaper the leader of the city council – Mary Mears – urged the two parties to work together and insisted that the local authority would not be a referee between two opposing parties saying, “For the sustained future of the event, the reputation of
