From 14th December 2010 until January 2011, Hove Neighbourhood Policing Team will be running Operation Giftwrap in Hove and Portslade. The operation will set out to tackle shoplifting, handbag theft and anti-social behaviour in the build up to the Festive season.
Working on Operation Giftwrap, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and Police Officers, (some in plain clothes) will patrol the retail areas of Hove and Portslade speaking with residents and shop staff to reduce the typical festive season crimes.
Police will be in direct contact with many retail premises via Shopwatch radios supplied through membership of the Business Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP) and will be on hand to speak personally with those acting suspiciously or believed to be involved in shoplifting activity.
Sussex Police are asking for businesses to check their security, make sure lights (including any security lights) are working properly, that alarms are set, and windows and doors are properly secured. PC Harry Lennard will be pleased to receive details of any extra security which is in place for the Christmas period as it will be useful to provide to his colleagues who are on Operation Giftwrap patrols.
Information packs are available for local businesses with details of prolific shoplifters, and this should enable owners to inform their security teams of any suspicious behaviour or specific incidents.
Nigel Liddell, Nightsafe Manager for the BCRP said “We will also be paying attention to car parks, advising people to put valuable goods out of sight, and will be giving out crime prevention advice.”
