Brighton & Hove secondary schools to be scrutinised
The city council has appointed Professor Michael Fielding to review 11-16 education to try to establish why Brighton & Hove’s school leavers perform so poorly compared to the national benchmark.
Michael Fielding is an Emeritus Professor of the Institute of Education and is well known for his work in the fields of radical education, school leadership and professional learning who last year completed an external evaluation of West Sussex County Council’s 'New Leadership' project.
The latest report by the regulator Ofstead was critical of some of Brighton & Hove’s secondary schools and sixth form colleges but praised its primary education. The number of pupils leaving school with 5 GCSE at grades A* to C [including Maths and English] is currently over 6% below the national average and the gap has widened over the past three years.
