Brighton & Hove could build 800 new council houses
An estate plan being prepared for the city council’s cabinet meeting in November will outline plans and site allocations for the first new council homes in the city since the 1980s.
Finance will come from existing council house rents and borrowing against future rental income and council assets. Coalition government grants for housing may also have come on stream in 2011 and changes to the council house rent system by central government are expected to raise enough money for 130 homes.
A planning application for the first tranche of 13 homes in Wellington Road is expected to be submitted later this year. The majority of the proposed sites would be limited to no more than 30 homes.
