A study commissioned by the University of Sussex and Brighton University has revealed that in 2009 their combined contribution to the UK economy exceeded £1bn and their contribution to Brighton & Hove and the south east was £967m.
The two higher education institutions, which if combined would represent the fourth largest university in the country, support 12,000 jobs including 4,231 directly employed staff [full time equivalent].
The 32,700 students spend £151m on accommodation, travel, food, entertainment, clothing and other consumer items.
The combined export earnings amounted to £32m per annum.
