Brighton & Hove planning committee has granted planning permission for the demolition of the existing 270-bed Varley Halls in Coldean to make way for a £30m development that will more than double the number of bedrooms
The existing 1960s halls will be replaced with ten buildings between three and four storeys in height able to accommodate 564 bedrooms as well as car parking. There will also be a separate block called The Hub housing a gym, cafe/bar and a launderette.
Some residents objected to the scheme which is necessary to address the shortage of dedicated student accommodation in the city and also to free up family housing which if often used for multiple occupation by students.
A section 106 agreement attached to the consent obliges the university to spend £75,000 on improved transport and sports facilities.
ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP COMMENT
This is an excellent decision by the planning committee which will make a significant contribution to the success of the university and, indirectly, the wider economy. Graduates are a valuable resource for the city, whihc has one of the best qualified workforces in the region, and the importance of attracting [and retaining] them cannot be overstated.
