Pubs and bars must offer drink in smaller glasses
From October 1st venues serving alcohol must offer customers the choice of a small [125ml] wine glass as well as the more usual 175ml and 250ml sizes.
In a review of their mandatory code of practice the Home Office has decided that offering small glasses will help customers monitor their intake of alcohol. One small glass of wine was generally considered to be 1 unit of alcohol but this only applies if the wine is 8% alcohol by volume; but most wine served in pubs and bars is at least 11% proof.
Those venues not able to offer a smaller drink size may be subject to a £20,000 fine.
