Hippodrome refurbishment bill could be over £9m

The Grade II listed Hippodrome in Middle Street could cost as much as £9.5m when the cost of sound-proofing to protect nearby residences is added to the bill for structural repairs.

The 113 year old theatre where the Beatles performed their only gig in Brighton in the 1960s was bought by Cheval Properties and is being leased to Academy Music Group [AMG] which hopes to restore it into a live music venue.

The Theatres Trust placed the Hippodrome on its list of venues in danger earlier this year. The building has been empty for the past three years [see earlier story]
