Greens hold onto North Laine in local by-election
The Brighton & Hove Green Party candidate Lizzie Dean won the St Peter and North Laine seat on Thursday at a by-election caused by the elevation of Cllr Keith Taylor to the European Parliament. This means that the make-up of the city council remains unchanged.
Despite a low turnout with less than 25% voting, the margin for the Green Party candidate was slightly more than 2:1 against the nearest rival – Labour Party candidate Tom French. The total number of votes cast for the winning candidate [1,816] increased by 2.5%. Both the Green Party and Labour have 13 seats, Conservatives have 25, LibDems have 2 and there is one independent candidate making a total of 54. Local election for the whole council will be held in May 2011.
