NHS Brighton and Hove spends more than £800 every minute of the year on health care for local people. They have organised a competition open to any business in the city to promote ways to improve staff wellbeing in the workplace.
All you have to do is tell them how you would use £800 to improve the health of your staff and in March 2010 NHS judges will pick their favourite suggestion and then fund it, up to a maximum of £800, for one year.
They will also put the winner in touch with local organisations that will help them make the most of their prize.
All they ask in return is help with publicity about what you are doing and how it’s going.
There is already a wealth of evidence to show that encouraging physical activity in and outside the work place can help to increase business productivity by:
- reducing stress and staff sickness absence [the recent winner of the 'Healthiest Workplace' award achieved a reduction in sickness absence from 15% to 5.5%]
- improving health and mood
Ideas could include:
- regular fruit deliveries to provide a healthy alternative to vending machines or biscuits
- sports equipment for staff social activities either at lunch times or outside of work hours
- arranging office massages for staff on-site
- personal training sessions
There is more information on 'healthy workplaces' on the NHS website - along with details of free training and staff health checks that businesses can take advantage of.
The deadline for entries is 5pm, Friday 26th February 2010.
