Bad weather halves shoppers to the city centre
The latest footfall figures from the Business Forum show that the three days of bad weather starting with the snowfall on Friday 18th December that turned to ice on Saturday and Sunday, reduced shoppers by 49%.
The reduction over the three days will be hard to make up in the few remaining days of Christmas trading and many small independents will struggle to physically accommodate an surge in shopper numbers before Christmas eve.
In 2008 during the same three days 168,838 people visited the prime pitch in Western Rd but last week only 85,269 were recorded – a decline of 49.5% (see footfall data for other weeks)
