Brighton has secured a £4m international conference aimed at high-flying women. The Soroptimist International GBI conference is scheduled for 25-30 October 2011.
The organisation works to enhance the status and human rights of women worldwide. ‘Soroptimist’ comes from the Latin words 'soror' meaning sister and 'optima' meaning best.
Around 2000 delegates, mainly female managers, will attend. Pre-conference meetings will take place at The Grand Hotel with the main conference at the Dome and a gala dinner at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel.
Conference bosses at the city council’s tourism arm VisitBrighton predict the event will generate £4m for the local economy.
Cabinet councillor for culture David Smith said, “We’re very excited to have been chosen to host such a prestigious event, which will undoubtedly garner a huge amount of press coverage. It is such a unique event, comprising almost entirely female delegates.”
“It’s particularly welcome news during the recession and shows how we’re working all the time behind the scenes to help local businesses and generate work.”
