Make Architects – the firm headed by Ken Shuttleworth who was involved in the design of 1 St Mary’s Axe (The Gherkin) and the iconic arch over the Wembley Stadium – will be appointed on Monday to design the new £400m Brighton Centre and expanded Churchill Square shopping centre.
The joint venture by Standard Life Investments and Brighton & Hove City Council is predicted to contribute £3bn into the local economy over the next two decades.
Make have put together a project team that includes Vx3, which has built conference centres in Hong Kong and Melbourne, retail specialists CDA architects and urban design specialists Urban Practitioners.
As well as an international conference centre the deveopment will include a 300 room hotel. It is expected to generate 1,300 jobs during construction.
