Amendments to a bill that would have given firms a vote on whether to approve or reject a levy on business rates to pay for infrastructure projects have been rejected by MPs. Unlike Business Improvement Districts, which require a referendum of all levy payers, BRS can be imposed on businesses.

John Cridland, deputy director-general of the CBI, said: "The rejection of these amendments pokes a finger in the eye of British businesses at a difficult time.
