The skills department set up only two years ago at a cost in the region of £7m is to be disbanded and its responsibilities shared between the schools and business departments.
The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) was created in 2007 and was intended to provide a sharper focus on promotion of world class skills and apprenticeships.
But now the department is to be disbanded, with the university and skills functions going to the Department for Chidlren, Families & Schools (DCFS) and innovation and science going to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (DBERR).
John Denham - formerly the skills secretary – is to be moved to the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).
