A military spectacular is set to bring Hove Lawns to life this coming Bank Holiday. Coinciding with the last weekend of the Brighton Festival, and saluting the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings, this 40s extravaganza is sure to put a swing in everyone’s step. And what’s more..it’s completely FREE.
Kicking off at 11:30am, the world famous ‘USO Shows’ will take centre stage with some eye-popping 40s swing and jive music. Add to that the stunning harmonies of vocal group ‘The Clover Sisters’, some impressive military machines and mouth watering 40s American themed food & drink, and the troops are well and truly mobilised for a day of surprises for the whole family.
Joining the ‘USO shows’ on stage is renowned comic impersonator John Ripley, who will bring the Brighton born Music Hall hero, Max Miller back to life; and mingling with the crowds, none other than ‘General Patton’ and his friends, (the ever popular re-enactment society will no doubt be keeping everyone in check!) Fans of military machines won’t be disappointed either with displays including a 1941 Chevrolet Articulated truck and trailer, vintage Harley Davidsons and a selection of other WW2 American Army vehicles. Also keeping the skies clear for the show, three Bren Anti aircraft guns will be manned by US soldiers throughout the day. And those uninterrupted views will delight aviation afficionados when a fly past and aerial display of a WW2 Tiger Moth will take to the air above Hove.
Bringing the show back down to earth with the sounds of horns and brass is Hove’s ATC 176 Squadron Marching Band, who will welcome the city’s new Lady Mayor at 12:30. And after all that, while the kids explore the fun fair, there are also stalls to browse, selling local produce and 40s memorabilia .
Displays from Newhaven Fort, the Etchingham Aviation and Military Preservation Society and Sussex Military History Society will also be joining us, helping to keep our heritage alive and remind us of the sacrifices our armed forces have made over the years.
The Military Show 2009 is kindly sponsored by The Army who will also be available to give advice and guidance to anyone interested in a career in the armed forces. If you are aged between 16 and 33, an exciting new direction in one of 140 available careers could be yours.
