A survey by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has ranked the city as the most cultured in the UK outside London.
The government department surveyed 2000 people in a range of cities late last year asking them about their access to, and engagement with, cultural opportunities.
Just over 61% of the adults surveyed actively engaged in the arts. This is the highest level outside the Capital and well ahead of much bigger cities and even last year’s UK City of Culture itself – Liverpool.
The cultural and artistic offer of the city is regarded as a major contributor to economic success attracting talented and innovative people to live and work here.
