If you thought you'd seen the last of Woolworths then take a look on the web.
It seems that the Woolworths name is still refusing, after all that it has been through, to give up the ghost. The brand is now going online.
The home shopping group Shop Direct has bought the Woolworths name and plans to relaunch it as an e-tail brand.
The group has been veering more and more toward internet as opposed to catalogue selling and the Woolworths venture will reinforce this trend. The business currently owes more than half of its £1.6 billion turnover to internet sales and this area appears to offer strong growth potential.
Woolworths on the other hand was slow to take to the internet and even with a concerted effort in this direction it still only generated 1% of its £1.1 billion turnover from online sales.
Clearly Shop Direct sees potential where others have not.
