|More big shoppers needed on the High Street|
National retail sales continue to slide
The latest British Retail Consortium-KPMG retail survey shows sales on the High Street in November were down 2.6% from a year earlier on a like-for-like basis.
It is the first time like-for-like sales have dropped for six months in a row since the survey was first released fourteen years ago and the report suggests that retailers are now facing a "nerve-wracking Christmas" as they wait to see how the all-important month of December pans out.
The British Retail Consortium said food and drink was the only sector to see sales rise last month, lifted by continuing heavy discounting by the supermarkets.
