Two Heads are better than one

On 2nd December, Brighton & Hove Economic Partnership will host a dinner for senior figures in local education (Heads, Principals, Councillors) to discuss ways to bring education and the world of work closer together in Brighton and Hove and the surrounding economic area.

The informal gathering, termed the Ed Heads, will discuss how:

  • we can work together to help students prepare for the world of work
  • we can increase the level of entrepreneurship among 14-25 year olds
  • we can identify early those who might start businesses and support them
  • we understand the local labour market better for the majority of young people leaving school
  • we can further understand the needs of the labour market for graduates
  • we can further link local businesses to education
  • we might tackle underemployment

It is hoped that the discussions will feed in to the new Economic Strategy for the city and lead to the creation of four or five actions to address barriers to effective engagement between education and business.

Confirmed attendees include:

  • Phil Harvey, Registrar, University of Sussex
  • Anne Cox, Head, Queens Park Primary
  • Debbie Crossingham, Head, Westdene Primary
  • Janet Felkin, Head, Blatchington Mill Secondary
  • Stuart McLaughlin, Head, Falmer High
  • Phil Frier, Principal, City College
  • Chris Thomson, Principal, BHASVIC
  • David Smith, Area Director, Sussex Learning and Skills Council
  • Dan Shelley, Manager, Brighton & Hove Learning Partnership
  • Cllr Vanessa Brown, Cabinet Member for Children & Young People, Brighton & Hove City Council
  • Cllr Ted Kemble, Brighton & Hove City Council
  • Professor Julian Crampton. Vice Chancellor. Brighton University
  • Simon Fanshawe. Chair. Economic Partnership
