City advice service for speedier planning

An advice service which speeds up the planning application process for city homeowners, businesses and their agents is set to expand.

Brighton & Hove City Council has improved its pre-application advice service for anyone thinking of developing or extending their home or business, and since 3rd November offers appointments at Citydirect , Hove Town Hall, as well as telephone advice.

The service, for small scale developments, includes home extensions, conservatories, lofts, garages, vehicle access along with commercial developments such as shop fronts, works to listed buildings and demolition of buildings in conservation areas.

The service, now available over the phone and in person, guides applicants through the early planning process, letting them know whether their proposals are acceptable ‘in principle’ and identifying anything that may need to be amended or reconsidered.

Council planners also provide information on the planning application process and help to identify the information that needs to be included with any application.

The council also recommends that applicants try and identify and resolve any problems before submitting an application, for example by consulting with their neighbours.

In December the council will be extending the service further by offering a formal written advice service for developers and agents planning larger scale developments. This may include some meetings depending on the scale of the proposed development.

Councillor Lynda Hyde, chairman of planning said: "We are constantly looking at ways to improve our planning services to residents and to speed up the planning application process. We are confident that expanding this valuable free service will go even further to help solve any potential problems at the earliest opportunity and pave the way for a smooth journey through the planning process."

After receiving advice, planning applications can be submitted online.

(Pre-application advice does not guarantee a successful outcome and each application will be treated on its own merits.)

To get pre-planning application advice over the phone, call the Service on 292323 or 292116 between 9.30am and 4.30pm.
