Christmas lights 2008 ... Christmas shopping... and Christmas prizes...

The traders of Unique Brighton (the Business Improvement District) are joining forces with the Theatre Royal this winter to make sure the festive season gets off to a resounding start.

The count down will begin on 20th November when Dorothy and the cast of the Wizard of Oz come to switch on the Christmas lights in East Street.

Southern FM will take centre stage and will run a variety competitions and hand out lots of wonderful prizes. Visit www.uniquebrighton.com for on-going updates on activities, celebrities and the all important prizes.

City Centre Manager Soozie Campbell says, “Because we know how much Brightonians love to dress up we will be organising a grand fancy dress competition with fabulous prizes donated by the Theatre Royal.

“The theme is the Wizard of Oz and prizes will be awarded for the best dressed child and the best dressed adult...So, get to work on those costumes and join in the fun! Or visit Revamp in Sydney Street for a ready made selection, but get your order in early as there will be a big rush on those man-sized Dorothy dresses.”

The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Brighton & Hove Councillor Garry Pelzer Dunn will judge the fancy dress competition and award the prizes to the lucky winners.

As well as Dorothy clicking her heels…the fun and games and prizes and the beautiful lights… the cast will perform everyone's favourite songs from the Wizard of Oz  - a taster of the iconic show at the Theatre Royal this festive season.

The line up for the evening on 20 November in East Street:

5.00pm - Southern FM kicks off the celebrations and follows through with competitions to win lots of Christmas goodies

6.00pm – Dorothy switches on the Christmas lights
