Retailers could save 30% on lighting bills

Times are tight for businesses and they are going to get tighter. The Carbon Trust has launched a free guide on increasing energy efficiency of display lighting and saving money.

Retail outlets could be missing out on savings of up to 30 per cent of lighting costs according to the Carbon Trust, with the potential for simple lighting efficiency initiatives to have a dramatic impact on energy bills. To help retail businesses take advantage of these savings, the Carbon Trust has launched a free Display Lighting Technology Guide, offering advice and tips on how retailers can reduce energy costs, while cutting carbon in the process.

The guide, which is particularly relevant for the retail sector, highlights opportunities to reduce energy use through lighting, without losing the visual impact which is so important to driving sales in a retail environment. By implementing no cost and low cost energy saving measures, such as upgrading to energy efficient light bulbs or making use of natural lighting, retailers can not only save money and reduce carbon emissions, but comply with relevant legislation such as Part L of the building regulations.

Hugh Jones, Solutions Director at the Carbon Trust, said: “Retailers are increasingly under pressure to demonstrate their environmental credentials to carbon-conscious customers and staff. Increasing the efficiency of display lighting offers the perfect opportunity to both save money and reduce carbon. The Carbon Trust’s technology guide is another tool that can be easily incorporated into a simple energy management programme.”

The Carbon Trust is urging retail outlets to download the publication free at www.carbontrust.co.uk/publications.

The Carbon Trust’s publication library features a range of fact sheets and industry specific guides, which offer a useful starting point for organisations concerned about energy efficiency. The Carbon Trust also offers a free Advice Line on 0800 085 2005, which any organisation can contact for expert advice on how to cut carbon emissions.
