Boris takes a stand in support of independent retailers
Boris Johnson has proposed measures to protect rents for small traders within new developments. His plans have been scrutinised by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and there is some doubt that these measure will have the desired result.
The plans aim to ensure affordable premises within any new development (along the lines of the plans for affordable housing within new build schemes).
The concerns of the BRC are that the new plans may undermine the viability of existing traders outside of such new developments. These traders will not benefit from the advantageous rent and subsequent rates calculations and will struggle to compete.
The BRC has suggested that the Mayor could help more retailers by focusing his efforts on tackling accessibility, transport and disorder while encouraging the Government to offer more effective business rates reductions to smaller retailers.
