Buyers cutting back due to rising costs
Fashion buyers heading out to the Barcelona Bread & Butter show are tightening the purse strings not for fear of falling sales from ove-stretched consumers but rather as a result of rising costs.
This is a trend highlighted by fashion commentator Drapers in its online bulletin. The show itself has also suffered from rising costs causing a break-away group of 12 manufacturers to set up a smaller niche event in the city at the same time but for a fraction of the cost per exhibitor.
The current economic climate has been pointing to a downturn in consumer spending but so far retailers are not feeling the pinch. Many traders have in fact experienced an increase in sales. Some, according to Drapers, have reported increases in the region of 11% but because costs have increased more than this it is proving very difficult to juggle the figures.
