BERR responds to pressure over residential micro-renewables
The controversial scheme offering grants for the installation of wind turbines and photo electric cells in domestic property will be revamped in next week’s budget in response to widespread criticism.
As reported on this site last week (see earlier story) the Low Carbon Building Programme would have under-spent its £18m budget by £10m because the Department of Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR - the old DTI) had made the rules for getting a grant so difficult that it strangled demand.
But a BERR official announced to a conference in London earlier in the week that the department was keen to improve the system but it is unlikely to meet the demands from the Renewable Energy Association (REA) for a £10bn fund to promote micro-renewables on residential property.
