Tesco is keen to move into the department store market. But a bid for its first such store looks set to be rejected in favour of a bid from Waitrose.
Tesco has developed a new concept in retailing with plans to sell food, clothing, electricals and sports goods over two floors in the style of a traditional department store.
According to a report in The Daily Telegraph, The cabinet of Hammersmith and Fulham council, London are debating which of three developers will get the go-ahead to regenerate Kings Street, one of Hammersmith's main shopping areas.
However, telegraph journalist have unearthed a document that suggest that the council is veering away from the Tesco scheme in favour of Waitrose as the anchor tenant.
Nevertheless, there is a suggestion that the Tesco department store concept is likely to pop up somewhere else.
