The smoking ban relaxed licensing hours and banning 15 year olds from pubs are just three factors that are adding to on-street drinking and related violence.
And New Road with its al fresco opportunities may be emerging as a new black spot for alcohol-fuelled crime.
There has also been a rise of 6% in the number of licensed premises in the city and there has been considerable resistance from the licensed trade to the proposal for a ‘cumulative impact zone’ in central Brighton.
However, on the up side the new licensing laws have given police added powers so that they can for example issue on the spot fines to drinkers in public places who are causing trouble and remove them from the scene.
Across Sussex police budgets are already tight and the extended hours are, with the consequential demand for increased overtime, putting an added strain on resources.
