Bus fares slashed in price

Brighton & Hove Bus Company is slashing bus fares in the city in a pre-Christmas price bonanza for thousands of passengers in the run up to Christmas.

The popular  CitySaver ticket giving all day travel is being reduced in price from £3.20 to just £2 during every Saturday and Sunday in December. The offer will also apply throughout the week between Christmas and New Year.

“With petrol prices breaking the £1-a-litre barrier and city car parks full by early morning, there’s never been a better time to take the bus for Christmas shopping trips”, Roger French, managing director of Brighton & Hove Buses explained.

“Such a bold price reduction has never been tried before and we’re aiming to generate an extra 150,000 ticket sales during December to make it work”, he added.

The CitySaver ticket offer is available in an area stretching from Seaford and Lewes in the east, throughout the city of Brighton and Hove and to Shoreham and Steyning in the west. “It’s a vast area in which passengers will be able to travel for an all inclusive fare of £2 for a day. Tickets will be available from drivers and children with the Company’s Bus ID cards can travel with an adult for just 20p a trip making it a fantastic deal for families”, Roger French said.

A day’s bus travel has never been priced so cheap. “When a day ticket was introduced over twenty years ago, the price was around £3. Now two decades later we’re offering it for just £2 and really hope that people will respond by taking the bus at the weekend”.

The move has been welcomed by city centre business leaders. City Centre Manager Soozie Campbell said “In the Unique Brighton business improvement district area shoppers are being encouraged to get involved in a new home-delivery scheme. For just £5 shoppers can have all their shopping delivered from as many shops in the UB area as they like. This new bus fare initiative will complement this really well.”

Geoffrey Theobald, Chair of the City Council’s Environment Committee said "This is a bold move by the bus company and very much to be welcomed. The company has already done well in achieving above average bus use and I hope this move improves things further."
