The car is still king for most people

Cars provide 80% of UK travel needs

Despite increased awareness of environmental concerns figures released on Thursday reveal that in 2006 the car accounted for the vast majority of all journeys make in the entire country.

More shockingly perhaps, the figures for the Department for Transport (DfT) also reveal that a quarter of all those car journeys were under 3.3 kilometres (2 miles). This figure has not changed in well over a decade.

The proportion of households without access to a car fell to a new low of 25% (this is significantly higher in Brighton & Hove)
