A proposed redevelopment at the top end of Church Street in the North Laine will, in addition to providing new office and retail space, help to reduce graffiti and save another piece of the North Laine from vandalism.
The proposal includes provision for seven offices, 42 homes (of which 40% will be affordable) and parking for 21 cars and has been put forward by Hargreaves Properties.
The site has been derelict since the late nineties and has attracted ugly graffiti and tagging. The effect of the redevelopment should be to reduce the levels of graffiti in the much the same way as we have seen in North Road. This area has seen graffiti levels fall from being one of the city’s worst hot spots to being virtually graffiti free.
The site also offers four shop premises suited to independent retail in keeping with the tradition of the North Laine.
Some concern has been expressed by resident and business groups about the height of the office accommodation which, at 7 storeys, exceeds the surrounding buildings.
