City College Brighton & Hove have unveiled ambitious plans to completely redevelop their site in the North Laine and the satellite campus in Whitehawk and add a new study centre at the proposed Falmer Football Stadium.
The £80m plans include a complete demolition of the city centre Pelham Tower and Cheapside buildings, replacing them with a new facility including extensive open space designed by BDP Architects.
Most of the funding (£70m) would come from the Sussex Learning & Skills Council (LSC) which is planning to invest £750m on capital projects every year for the next four years.
It is hoped that the new campus will be complete for the 2011/2012 academic year and the college would continue to operate during construction work.
The old COMART campus in Whitehawk would also be completely demolished and a new facility would follow the geographical contours of the site overlooking the South Downs with the main building situated adjacent to Wilson Avenue. It would provide engineering, construction and motor maintenance facilties.
The learning and study centre at Falmer would be in the east stand of the new Community Stadium and would be operated in partnership with Brighon & Hove Albion football club which has already had considerable success with a similar, though much smaller, facility at Withdean Stadium.
