Hippodrome music venue born again
The same group that operates Brixton Academy has bought the Hippodrome in Middle Street, until recently Mecca Bingo but formerly a music venue boasting shows by The Beatles and the Rolling Stones in the 1960s.
Academy Music Group (AMG) announced the signing of a 35 year lease with owners London Merchant Securities yesterday. Brixton Academy is an award winning venue that has become a legend in music circles. The Hippodrome’s return to a music venue will help to plug the gap in venues of this size in the city. It still retains many of its original features and grandeur of the late 1890s when it was built and AMG's stated aim is to bring the Hippodrome back as a quality entertainment venue, working with local bands and artists as well as major UK and international acts
