Planning application for housing at Gatwick
A planning application for 2,700 houses on land earmarked for the expansion of Gatwick airport could deny the possibility of a second runway after 2019.
A consortium including Wimpey and Persimmon Homes wants to develop the plot to the north-east of the Gatwick Airport complex which could potentially be the location of a second runway. An outline planning application has been submitted to Crawley Borough Council. The government plans to expand Stansted and then Heathrow but only if it can meet stringent emissions controls to reduce air pollution. Gatwick was widely viewed as being a ‘next best option’ if Heathrow fails to meet air quality standards and an expansion of the Gatwick facility could increase passenger numbers from 30 million to 80 million per annum.
