Shoppers in the city centre are being encouraged to recycle their wrappers rather than trashing them. New bins with compartments for paper and cans have been installed around the city centre.
New style litterbins have been set up in 13 sites in the city as part of a trial to see if it will encourage shoppers to recycle more.
Cityclean is carrying out the trial and have positioned the bins at busy locations across the city centre including West Street, North Street, Western Road, Queen's Road, Blatchington Road and St James Street.
If successful, the bins could become a permanent feature in other parts of the city.
Environment councillor Gill Mitchell said, "We are constantly looking for new ways to encourage recycling and I'm sure shoppers will welcome the opportunity to recycle their cans and paper while visiting the city centre.
"If the scheme is a success, we could well see similar bins in other busy locations, such as our seafront, parks and leisure facilities."
