Lyons inquiry latest
Sir Michael Lyons has been leading an inquiry into local government finance for what seems like forever. Publication of his findings has been delayed several times but the big day might be drawing nearer.
The Chancellor announced on 6th December that he and Ruth Kelly, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), have asked Sir Michael Lyons to provide the government with a view on the implications for local government of the recent Eddington report on transport, the Barker report on planning and the Leitch review on skills (see earlier stories in Knowledgebase)
Sir Michael will be publishing a short discussion document on Monday 11 December seeking views on the key areas in which the recommendations of these three reviews have potential implications for local government. He will be asking for responses by Friday 19 January 2007. He will also use this opportunity to provide further thoughts on the recent local government white paper. The final report will now be published around the time of the Budget next year.
The Brighton & Hove Economic Partnership (BHEP) gave evidence to the Lyons Enquiry in 2005.
