News - 28 October 2006
 | | Congestion on the A27 between Brighton & Portsmouth |
A27 road problems - partial solution announced
The South East Regional Assembly (SEERA) agreed on Friday 28th October to include improvements to three bottlenecks on the A27 in their five year transport plan including an express bus lane between Brighton and Portsmouth and massive improvements for Chichester.
The Sussex Coast Expressway would link the two cities with a high-speed, non stop bus link but it has yet to be agreed by central governement. The £170m package of measures will also provide a £137m bypass for Chichester and improvements to their park and ride scheme starting in 2014. Chichester’s willingness to investigate the possibility of congestion charging targeting commuters (see earlier story in knowledgebase) may well have been instrumental in persuading SEERA to target other improvements on the city. A much demanded bypass for Arundel has been postponed until at least 2016.
