Brits spend more on eating out than eating in!
For the first time people in the UK spend more in restaurants than they do on food they intend to prepare and eat at home. Great news for Brighton's restaurants but....
Rising disposable incomes and more working and single mums mean that household spending on food and drink outside the home tipped £87.5bn in 2004 compared to £85.6bn spent on domestic food purchases.
The amount spent on food and drink outside the home has increased by just over 53% since 1992 when the Office for National Statistics started keeping records. Increasingly consumer spending is being directed towards leisure and “experiences” rather than comparison goods. This is good news for Brighton’s restaurants (Brighton has more places to eat per head of population than anywhere in the UK outside London) but bad news for struggling retailers.
