Surely while the men have their eye on the ball and off the bank balance their wives and girlfriends have five weeks of uncensored shopping to get stuck into? So why are major retailers bemoaning the World Cup as though it has stifled shopping?
It would appear that having sold out of England flags and other patriotic paraphernalia Woolworths is suffering a 6.7% slump in sales and seeing a lot fewer customers in its stores.
We don’t even need to wait for the official footfall figures to know that there are a lot fewer people in the shops – even the out-of-town supermarkets were quiet last Saturday as the nation settled in with takeaway pizzas and beers to watch England beat Paraguay.
But is it just the footie? Were the laddettes stopping in with their lads or were they on the beach soaking up those long-awaited rays of sunshine?
Whatever the reason the shops are not seeing the customers they need to keep the tills ringing. And therefore as the first signs of summer arrive so too do the summers sales.
Mango, always ahead of the game in knocking down its prices, is already promoting 50% discounts on summer stock… And yet we have only just cast off the winter woollies and realised the need for new stuff!
